BANA KUMA

Bana Kuma means “sacred altering.” It is what makes thoughts become reality. By using ancient music and mythological archetypes, discover how you can become the master of your reality. There are 12 pillars of wisdom each with it’s own music, dance, story, art, mythology and unique character associated with it. Your interaction with The Twelve is intended to enhance your creative power or your Bana Kuma.

Dan Bailey has been a certified by Chris Berry as a Bana Kuma Drum & Dance teacher. He hosts classes across the natural oasis of the Hamptons in New York, teaching rhythms representing the sacred elements of air, fire, water and earth. Classes are accessible for all levels from beginner to advanced. Drums are available to use for class upon request.

CLASSES ARE HELD OUTDOORS AT PRIVATE RESIDENCES.

"IF YOU HAVE A HEARTBEAT,

YOU HAVE RHYTHM."

- DAN BAILEY

DRUMBE is a school for students who want to discover and develop their voice on the West African djembe.  Learn the Language of the Drum with Dan Bailey who teaches traditional West African polyrhythms, chants and djembe techniques specializing in Baba Olatunji's world renowned drum language.

Using Olatunji's method of vocalizing rhythms, drumming becomes accessible to everyone.  By seeing, hearing, saying and playing the rhythms this approach appeals to all learning styles.  Get clear tones while protecting your hands and taking care of your drum.  Through a series of lessons and proficiency demonstrations progressing from beginner to advanced, Drumbe workshops bring each student to a performance level of playing while honoring and preserving ancient rhythms and culture.

Dan Bailey has been teaching traditional West African polyrhythms, chants and djembe techniques for over 20 years.  Bailey is the godson and protégé of Babatunde Olatunji, who originally introduced traditional African music to the West in the 1950’s.  A native New Yorker with South African roots, Bailey started studying intensively with Olatunji when he was just 12.  He immediately started teaching his own djembe workshops and providing live drums for African dance classes.  Using Olatunji’s method of vocalizing rhythms, he helps drumming to become accessible to all.  Bailey has travelled much of Africa to study with the Masters and has hosted international drum workshops and retreats in West Africa, South Africa, Costa Rica and Australia.

Bailey performs with his African Drum troupe, leading performances at cultural events, sacred ceremonies, festivals and beach bonfires around the world.

"DRUMMING IS THE SIMPELIST THING WE CAN DO TO BRING US TOGETHER."

"Where I come from

we say that rhythm is the soul of life,

because the whole universe revolves around rhythm,

and when we get out of rhythm,

that’s when we get into trouble."
